New year paper adventures

Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to advance my papermaking skills, thanks to the experts at Paperhouse Studios. I had studied the craft in school, but most of my paperworks were accomplished either at home or at my former studio using basic equipment like a kitchen blender. During my time at Paperhouse, I learned a variety of techniques as well as learning how to use the beater, an absolute must if I want to use more fibrous materials like abaca or flax.

Up until now, I’ve only used cotton, which is very beginner friendly. Now I was introduced abaca, flax, and hemp. I learned how to emboss, make shape sheets, adding pigments, pulp painting, and watermarks. The latter technique I’m curious to try again. It’s part of an ongoing project where I’m exploring about lost language and identity, and I think watermarks might be a good technique to use for that project.

All of these techniques have opened up a whole aspect of my practice and I’m eager to try more.

I’m grateful for the generous support of the Ontario Art Council.
