What LIES BENEATH IT (2019)
what lies beneath it
Cotton embroidery on Taniai uda Zenban washi, 13 x 53.87 in (33 x 137 cm)
Naples is in a constant state of repair and discovery. What is repairable is patched up or simply built on top of it, yet the weight of the city’s history is palpable; artefacts are uncovered by accident or by chance. My work aims to understand what those layers are, to uncover what is not only invisible but also what has remained quiet. The drawings in embroidery thread on paper are not an accurate portrait of Naples; they are based on my mind’s memory of looing up walking though narrow, uneven winding streets, or looking down onto the city, all the while trying to navigate my way and keeping in mind what lay beneath my feet.
What lies beneath it was part of the group exhibition, gestures: life in the shadow of a volcano, on view at the Ada Slaight Gallery, OCAD University.
